Nearly 20 large-scale projects have been launched in the province A golden dollop of canola biodiesel slips from a glass beaker Brenda Zenert is holding aloft at the request of a photographer during an impromptu demonstration of how water removes impurities from the fuel. The water wash process is one of several cleansing steps that help ensure the finished product meets the stringent North American standard for fuel quality known as ASTM (American Society for Testing and Material). As head of biodiesel production at the Biofuel Technology Centre, a small-scale facility for research and demonstration at Olds College, about 100 kilometres north of Calgary, it's Zenert's job to perfect the small-scale biodiesel-making process that begins here by crushing canola seed in a cast-iron screw press.
