June 29, 2007 - Salt Spring Island, BC - The Salt Spring Island Fire Department is pleased to announce that they are switching all of their emergency response vehicles to Biodiesel fuel. SSIFD vehicles will now run on B20 biodiesel, currently the highest commercial grade available on Vancouver Island. “Salt Spring is a “green” place and we look forward to doing our part. Besides switching to a more environmentally friendly fuel, we’ve also switched to environmentally friendly foams, and we recycle as much as we can,” states Chief Dave Enfield. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel produced from renewable sources such as plant oils (canola, soy or palm oils), as well as low grade cooking oils and trap grease. B20 emits 12.3 % less carbon monoxide, 12% less particulate and 20% less unburned hydrocarbons. It is biodegradable and non-toxic. Biodiesel significantly reduces green house gas production. When compared with diesel, greenhouse gas reductions range from 71% for biodiesel made from canola to 92% for biodiesel made from waste oil from restaurants and fast food outlets.
