A first-of-its-kind grease recycling program kicks off Tuesday in the City of Burnaby.

The city has been chosen for a pilot project that allows residents to drop off their used cooking oil at the Still Creek Recycling Depot.

Oil will then be collected by ERM BioSource, a company that converts cooking oil into biodiesel.

The project - a joint venture between the company and the Recycling Council of British Columbia - will run for about a year.

Burnaby will be the first city in B.C. to offer the program, although ERM BioSource has already worked with 700 restaurants around the Lower Mainland.
